Create vertically aligned pathways that run from teacher preparation through induction and continue into ongoing school-based learning.
Part of what has been challenging about the American non-system of teacher preparation is that there is no continuity from what one learns in teacher preparation to what is expected during induction, to the ongoing goals of one’s school or district.
Coherence across the early stages of a teacher’s professional life could happen by aligning much of teacher learning with an expanded version of the Common Core, which might serve as the anchor for all of this work. Or it might happen by licensing networks of schools that specialize in a particular approach to run teacher training, induction, and schools in a consistent manner.
