Andy Coons

Senior Director, Center for Great Public Schools, National Education Association

Andy Coons is a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT- renewed). He received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Washington and his Masters in Teaching at Seattle University. He is completing a Ph.D in Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Washington.

Andy taught for 13 years in high-poverty elementary and middle schools. He has been a district-wide technology facilitator, a middle school math coach, and a National Board candidate support provider and Jump Start trainer.  Andy is past-President of the Tacoma Education Association and the WEA-Tacoma UniServ Council. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Washington Education Association and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Andy was a member of the Board of Examiners for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and a commissioner on the NEA Commission on Effective Teachers and Teaching (CETT).

Before coming to NEA in 2014, Andy served as Chief Operating Officer for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In his current role as Senior Director for the NEA Center for Great Public Schools, Andy oversees the Teacher Quality, Education Support Professional Quality, Priority Schools, Research and Policy Departments and is responsible for the organization’s research, policy and professional practice agenda, initiatives and partnerships.
